Birthmarks

Some birthmarks may be our beauty mark or unique identifying feature, but certain spots may make us self-conscious. Though these lesions are often harmless, you may be seeking treatment based on the location, size, color or recent changes in its appearance to help reduce unwanted attention or just help you feel confident.

Birthmarks can be of two types: pigmented and vascular.

  • Pigmented birthmarks are due to a cluster of pigment cells (melanocytes) or increased production of pigment (melanin). These birthmarks include café au lait spots, nevus of ota/ito, Becker’s nevi, and congenital melanocytic nevi.
  • Vascular birthmarks, which occur in 10% of infants, are due to a cluster of vessels in the skin. These birthmarks include infantile hemangiomas, port wine stains, venous malformations, lymphatic malformations, arteriovenous malformations and associated syndromes such as PHACES, Klippel-Trenaunay and Sturge-Weber.
